Selective List

Each of the pubs in the selective list has a page to itself with a description, photos, website link, recent news, visitor comments and a form for adding your comments (of course, not all of these exist for every pub). For reference, they have been arranged in various lists as follows. Once within a list, the full pages of each pub has links to all the other pubs in that list.

Please note that this is not a list of “CAMRA-approved” pubs or recommendations. For recommendations, obtain a copy of the Good Beer Guide. Nor is it the case that every pub not on this list is terrible. In fact, I intend to add some more to this list just as soon as I can get their details. Also some pubs change so fast there may be some good ones I haven‘t noticed yet.

The selective list contains pubs that in my view add something positive to the interest and diversity available in this area. National beer brands do not do this and are therefore left out.

Note also that no particular endorsement is implied by a link to a pub‘s website.

The premises listed here come into the following categories: (1) Pubs that have had a Good Beer Guide listing and have not since clearly deteriorated; (2) Pubs that narrowly missed a GBG listing due to quota restrictions; (3)Pubs with unusual features or facilities likely to be of interest to users of this site. The feature or facility should be clear from the write-up.

Getting there: The information provided here, like all the rest is the best I can do, but may contain errors or be out of date. Obviously, check before travelling. There are timetables to all the services mentioned here, and many more, at stagecoach logo

The photos: These have been culled from various sources, but mostly taken by Martin Sherlock, who is still learning. This explains the uneven quality. The intention is to standardise on 200px thumbnails, with 1000px (approx) full-size photos accessed by clicking on the thumbnails as usual. The intention is to have an external “portrait” shot and one or more interior shots designed to show the ambience and highlight unusual features, if there are any.

Opening times: On 24 November 2005, as I am sure you are aware if you live in England, new licensing laws came into effect, providing, inter alia, for longer opening hours for pubs. Thus most of the hours listed in this site were rendered out of date. I have continued to list them as better than nothing until we can check with all the pubs involved. Where I have found the new permitted hours and they are different from before, I have listed them too. Many pubs are likely, as before, to open less time than they are allowed to. Where I have checked the actual hours open with the pub, the words “New opening hours” appear. I suggest you take all the hours listed with a pinch of salt, and if it's important, check with the pub before travelling.

To make things clear, when, for example, the hours on Friday are given as “10-12.30”, this means the pub opens at 10am on Friday and closes at 12.30 on Saturday morning.
