Without wishing to say a word against the quality of the ale here, it is first and foremost a music pub, which should be evident even on a first visit as you listen to the jukebox and (when your eyes have adjusted to the dark) look at the posters and pictures on the walls. Musicians play upstairs most evenings in the big upstairs room. The bar is rather basic; a cosy corner has a real fire and table football is played. Not many people’s local but lots of regulars. One handpump dispenses Westons Perry, Organic Cider, 1st Quality and Scrumpy on rotation. A popular quiz is held on the first Sunday of the month. The courtyard garden is recommended for summer drinking.

Open 7-12 (1 Thu, Fri, Sat); Sat 2-1; Sun 2-11.30
